Community policy
- Keep interactions civil: If you find yourself in a disagreement with someone, you should refrain from making personal attacks and using bigoted language, including slurs which degrade another person or group of people based on gender, race, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, etc.
- Be a productive member of the wiki and assume good faith: Contribute to the wiki in line with any established processes and conventions, and assume good faith when reviewing edits by other users. If you feel like an article or section could be improved, consider helping out. If you think a user may be editing in contrast with wiki policy, contact them and discuss possible improvements that could be made.
- Do not engage in or instigate edit wars: Disrupting the wiki with "edit warring" over differing opinions of a topic with another user should be avoided at all costs. You should first try to discuss any issues and reach a compromise. If the situation continues or worsens, contact an administrator.
- Do not be disruptive: Disruptive behavior isn't limited to spam and vandalism, but includes any action that negatively affects other people and their ability to engage with the community. For examples of what is considered disruptive, see our Blocking Policy.
- Do not post or upload inappropriate content: The Secret Life of Pets franchise has fans from all ages. As such, inappropriate content is not allowed anywhere on the site.
- Do not engage in excessive self-promotion: The wiki is a collaborative community resource for the topic at hand. It isn't a free place to advertise your website, YouTube channel, blog, social media account, etc., regardless if it is related to The Secret Life of Pets franchise.
- Ask for help: If you're confused on how to do something or have questions, don't be afraid to ask! Getting help from the community is always encouraged, and administrators are also here to assist. For Fandom-related issues, use Special:Contact to reach support.
Editing policy
- Do not misuse the Edit summary: The summary shows up in Recent Changes and to any editor who has previously edited that page if they are following it, so it's helpful to add a summary and let the community know what has been changed, even if it's something trivial. Please don't misuse the Edit summary to converse with other users or point out problems that need to be fixed by a moderator or administrator, use the appropriate user's Message Wall instead.
- Use the Minor edit checkbox: Minor edits include small changes, such as grammar and punctuation, and any edit that doesn't add to or change a significant amount of information on a page.
- Follow article layouts: Most articles are generally structured a certain way. Make sure you follow the basic layout standards of every page to make it easier for others in the community to find what they're looking for.
- Avoid creating blank or stub articles: Creating stubs is fine if you plan on expanding the article later on. However, don't create blank articles or stubs for the sake of creating them just because the page doesn't exist yet, especially for subjects that have little to no information about them and have merely been mentioned.
- Avoid creating inappropriate, unrelated, or duplicate articles: Articles on the wiki should not contain unofficial content or be unrelated to The Secret Life of Pets franchise. Duplicate articles should also be avoided unless they were created to redirect to an existing article.
- Avoid adding false information and speculation: Before adding or modifying information on an article, you should verify that the content is true and from a credible source. Speculation should largely be avoided, unless there is enough evidence to support it.
File policy
Images and other media add points of interest in an article. Only official, high-quality media is allowed on the main namespace of this wiki. You're allowed to upload files that add relevant or necessary information to an article, or files appropriate for a gallery page. However, you should be careful to avoid uploading anything that could be deemed as vandalism.
General guidelines
- Filenames should be short, descriptive, and use an appropriate file extension (i.e., JPG or PNG). GIFs should generally not be used on the main namespace, although they can be used on profiles, Message Walls, blogs, etc.
- Files should be of the highest quality available. Pixelated or blurry media should not be added unless absolutely necessary to illustrate a point or represent a subject.
- Files should not contain additional assets or text, such as watermarks, logos, subtitles, black bars, etc.
- Files should be unique and not duplicates of existing files. A duplicate file refers to any file that contains the exact, if not similar information as an existing file. If a duplicate file is uploaded, it must be an improved version of the file being replaced.

Fanart, fanfiction, and other fan-related works are only allowed on User Pages, Message Walls, User Blogs, and in the Discussions area. Fanart should not be used in articles or galleries. Alternatively, you can post any Illumination-related fanon on the Illumination Entertainment Fanon Wiki.
Page protection
By default, The Secret Life of Pets Wiki allows any Registered user to edit pages and participate in discussions on the wiki. However, some pages may be semi-protected and only allow Autoconfirmed users to edit them due to high traffic or past vandalism issues, while others may be fully protected so that only administrators can edit them (as is the case with policy pages).
If you think the protection level should be changed for a specific page or file on the wiki, please post on its associated talk page to start a discussion.
